image of laser therapyAs most smokers will tell you, trying to quit with no help or preparation takes almost superhuman willpower, coupled with an extremely strong desire to quit. As many of the traditional methods of quitting smoking are proving to be unsuccessful for many, or the side effects to much to bear, people are turning more and more to less conventional methods of quitting smoking.

One of those methods that is increasing in popularity is laser therapy. This is where a low level laser is applied to certain pressure points in the body. This method is common in many disciplines such as reflexology, shiatsu and acupuncture. The result is said to be an immediate and lasting reduction of the usual withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking.

Laser therapy is said to mimic the sensation of smoking and inhaling, by releasing endorphins (the natural chemicals in the brain that function as natural painkillers). Laser therapy is said to release these chemicals (that are also responsible for feelings of contentment), to help reduce the stress normally associated with quitting cigarettes. The session is said to leave you calm and relaxed, much like the feelings associated with smoking a cigarette.

The effects of laser therapy are said to last for extended periods, mimicking the sensation of absorbing nicotine for up to 9 months. The ups and downs experienced with withdrawal are said to be evened out, so the brain no longer triggers the cravings normally experienced when nicotine levels drop. Pressure points normally associated with weight gain and digestion should also be stimulated, to help control overeating during the quitting process.

Like acupuncture and other forms of nicotine replacement however, there is little that can be done to reduce the psychological dependency on cigarettes and smoking. There is still need for some sort of behavioral therapy to help the smoker deal with the danger situations they face on a daily basis.

During the consultation, the therapist should talk through the psychological aspects of quitting smoking, and offer you alternative methods to deal with these issues. If this is not addressed either by the therapist or the patient, then the failure rate of this method is almost guaranteed.

Much like anything that western medicine doesn’t completely understand, it is not without its critics and controversy. Consumer watchdog groups have declared laser therapy ‘fraudulent’ and called for it to be stopped. According to the American Lung Association, very few clinical trials have been carried out, with no real proven results. The few that have been conducted show no difference between those that were exposed to a placebo.

Our Comments: Like acupuncture, we’re not entirely convinced. If nothing else has worked for you and you wish to give laser therapy a try, it is a natural method so it certainly can’t hurt.

We do feel quitting smoking is far more of a psychological issue than a physical one, so requiring a shift in thinking, rather than simply dealing with physical cravings alone.
