It was actually developed much in the same way that Zyban (read our review) was. Wellbutrin was originally prescribed as an anti-depressant. It was later found that smokers who took the drug no longer felt the need to smoke. While Zyban and Chantix are different, they are both spawns of Wellbutrin, and use its receptor blocking abilities. Zyban is simply Wellbutrin repackaged, whereas Chantix has been redeveloped to stop nicotine from attaching to receptors in the brain, without the antidepressant properties. When we smoke the brain releases the chemical known as Dopamine. This gives us a pleasurable feeling for a very short period. Soon after the brain tells us to smoke again so we can get that pleasurable feeling back. So by stopping nicotine attachment the brain no longer releases the Dopamine and there is no longer the want to smoke. A 12 week trial showed that Chantix had a very high success rate, as much as 44%. When compared to other stop smoking aids this is very high. With stats like this, interest in Chantix sky-rocketed. However, Chantix is well known now for its many side effects. These range from the very minor, to the most severe effects anyone could possibly experience. Nearly every single person suffers from at least one side effect, while it is common to suffer from several at the same time. The most common side effects are the minor ones. These include nausea (30%), sleep problems (insomnia, nightmares, strange & vivid dreams), constipation, gas and vomiting. Because Chantix works on the brain there are many cases where people who take the drugs report strange behavioural changes. People have known to become depressed, agitated, aggressive, angry and even suicidal. Some have taken their own life or have died as a result of behavioural changes due to taking Chantix. This is why Chantix is prescription only. A thorough medical background check should be done by a doctor before it is prescribed. Those who have a history of depression or mental health are advised not to take Chantix as it may worsen symptoms.

I took Chantix for 3 months. I made me really sick. upset stomach and spent alot of time in the bathroom. Plus I am still smoking. I would not recommend this to anyone!

Hey there to the living, I’m back now also, but what I went through in the last two weeks of the twelve week course of champix was a nightmare. I no longer smoke, but at a terrible price coming off champix. Throughout the course I experienced highs emotionally, but heartburn, nausea, headaches, bach pain were a daily experience however, no one warned me about when I finished the course.
Within three days of stopping champix I was hospitalised with severe chest, back and head pain, the GP unable to stabilise me. I have no clear recollection of the days spent in hospital other than confusion and severe anxiety, I thought I was a gonner.
Fourteen days after champix I am now recovering.
I would recommend anyone considering champix to get professional advice beforehand.

champix is fantastic. best product on the market. I stopped 2 weeks ago and have started to reduce my champix to 1 a day as for Margy B, Burleigh Heads (Above) your an idiot!!! 3 month!! and you still smoked. get real. after 14 days i just stoped no side affects no will to light up. thanks

I tried this drug from Aug 09 - oct 09. I quit smoking for 2 months. I was planning on getting plastic surgery so I had to quit. I did have vivid dreams. My stomach got nausea but if I ate a meal or a bannana and o.j I was okay. I didn’t have any other medical issues. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to quit. I am 29 and my so is 47 we both took it. Only complaint was the stomach (uneasiness) but if we ate a meal it was great.

After smoking for 18 years I decided to quit for good. I was skeptical about Chantix and the side effects. However, I began taking Chantix on a Saturday and by that Monday, I couldn’t even stomach the thought of having a cigarette. You are allowed to smoke for the the first 7 seven days and to set a quit date however, I couldn’t make it the first seven with smoking. I am entering week 2 and feel great. My side effects: I have always had unusual and very vivid dreams, with Chantix, I have had fewer, less vivid dreams…I began a diet when I started taking Chantix so that I would not gain weight. Honestly, my focus has been more on losing weight then having a cigarette. I have much more energy and feel terrific! If you have any doubts about Chantix, don’t, just try it!

Well tomorrow I take my last pill in my 2 week starter kit. I found champix to be less effective than patches. While I’m not smoking much, I never smoked that much before but wanted to stop the cravings. I still crave cigarettes…not as much, but I still crave them. The patch worked for 5 years last time I quit. I’m thinking of hypnotism next…

I took Champix for 13 days and stopped smoking on day 9. I have to say, giving up the cigs was surprisingly easy, however, what I did not bargain for was the side effects. I managed to escape nausea etc and the vivid dreams I actually found quite enjoyable, however, I developed mood swings from nowhere and all my motivation for life practically disappeared overnight and I even went as far as thinking that life was pointless and after spending 4 days living in my room I decided enough was enough …. at this stage, I analyzed by behaviour and had no other reason except for these pills and have immediately stopped. I am only on day 2 of no pills but so far, I have noticed improvements in my mood and behaviour. I have quit cold turkey before and whilst I was grumpy on occasions, this recent feeling was on a different level altogether. It was super easy not to smoke on the pills but in my opinion, the side effects far too much to deal with so its the good old fashioned cold turkey way for me …. it was a good kickstart though as I am now 2 days without pills and still no cigs!
