Sometimes it can be hard to find the right motivation when you are trying to quit smoking.

One thing you could use is some smoking statistics. Wikipedia defines statistics as “a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data”. Statistics will help give you a good idea about anything you wanted to know about smoking; how many people smoke worldwide, how many deaths smoking causes, what is the average someone spends on cigarettes in a year etc.

Here are some examples of global statistics that might help motivate you to quit.

A cigarette contains over 4000 toxic or carcinogenetic chemicals

Smoking related-diseases are responsible for one in ten adult deaths.

Somebody dies from tobacco use every 8 seconds

Approximately 10 million cigarettes are sold a minute, that’s 15 billion a day

One in every 5 teenagers aged 13-15 smokes

80,000-100,000 children start smoking everyday

50% of those who start to smoke when an adolescent will go on to smoke for 15-20 years.

Smoking is the single largest cause of premature or preventable death

The United States spends approximately $150 billion annually on smoking related diseases

80% of American advertising executives from some of the top agencies believe that advertising makes smoking more appealing or socially acceptable to children.

In 1997, tobacco companies in the United States spent $15 million a day in advertising. That equates to 5.7 billion in that year.

So how can you use a statistic as a motivation to quit smoking?

Whenever you find a statistic that catches your eye, applies to you and makes you really think about your smoking habit, then make a note of it, print it out or rip it out of the book or magazine. Keep that statistic with you at all times and whenever you feel the need for a cigarette then take the statistic out and read it. It may be all the motivation you need not to light up.

Keep reading it over and over again if need be. Feel free to print off the above statistics if you wish.

You are not restricted to one statistic of course; you may end up carrying a collection of them around with you in your pocket, wallet or purse. It is best to only collect statistics that really interest you and catch your eye, the ones that make you think about your smoking habit may be the ones that help motivate you to quit.

There are hundreds of different quit smoking methods that smokers can choose from when they quit. Three of the most popular methods are Cold turkey, N.R.T’s and Hypnosis. I am going to talk about the pros and cons of each to see if popularity equates to effectiveness.

Cold Turkey:

Cold Turkey is the simplest method of quitting smoking you can try. This makes it a very popular option for those who want to quit. Basically you just stop smoking without any planning or consideration. People usually throw away any items that remind them of smoking eg lighter, ashtrays at the same time. Out of sight, out of mind. All that a person uses to quit smoking is their will power.

Pros:

Inexpensive because there is nothing to buy.

Cons:

Mind and Body are not sufficiently prepared to stop smoking

Gives Nicotine more power because constant thought is on smoking

Requires superhuman will power to successfully quit.

Doesn’t deal with the psychological reasons why a person smokes

Cold turkey has the biggest failure rate of all the quit smoking methods. When you take a look at the cons you can see the reasons why. I can understand why people would try it, unfortunatley it is not as easy as just putting the cigarettes down.

N.R.T’s

N.R.T’s (Nicotine Replacement Therapies) come in different forms e.g gums, patches. The idea of a N.R.T is to help the smoker wean of cigarettes by placing a little bit of nicotine into their system. This is said to help ease cravings and withdrawal symptoms. A smoker uses a N.R.T until they feel ready to quit on their own

Pros:

Helps to ease cravings and withdrawal symptoms

Prepares the smoker for quitting physically. Smoker quits when they are ready

Cons:

Expensive

Not appropriate in many situations

Smokers have become addicted to the N.R.T’s due to it’s nicotine content

Only deals with physical cravings, not psychological ones

They have many known side effects

Uses nicotine to cure an addiction to………nicotine?????

Using nicotine to cure nicotine really confuses me. N.R.T’s have a high failure rate. Many people will quit for a while but end up going back to smoking in the long run. This will usually occur once N.R.T’s are no longer in use and the nicotine supply has been cut off. The main reason smoking will start again is because N.R.T’s only deals with the physical nicotine craving. Smoking is at least 50% psychological.

Hypnosis:

Hypnosis is more than waving a watch back and forth and getting people to do silly things. It is a way to deliver messages to our subconscious in order to change our way of thinking. Through hypnosis you can turn negative thoughts into positive ones for the betterment of someone’s life. Hypnosis helps a smoker by changing the way they think about smoking. eg. smoking is not pleasurable, smoking is not relaxing. A smoker can either go see a licensed hypnotherapist or buy self hypnosis C.D’s/D.V.D’s.

Pros:

Helps deal with some of the psychological aspects of smoking

Smokers can choose between self hypnosis or hypnosis sessions with a hypnotherapist.

Cons:

Hypnosis sessions can expensive and time consuming

Not everyone can be hypnotised.

I have no doubt that hypnosis can potentially help people to quit by changing the way they think about smoking. But is hypnosis really necessary? I do not believe it is. People can change the way they think about smoking without hypnosis of any kind. There are other methods and techniques that smokers can use on themselves to change their way of thinking.

When it comes down to it I do not believe that popularity equates to effectiveness. We can see from the three of the most popular methods available. Two of them are basically ineffective and one is completely unnecessary. Smoking is largely a psychological addcition that can be fixed by the smoker and the smoker alone. All they need is a little guidance on how this can be done. Once the psychological addiction has been dealt with, no other quit smoking method will be required again.

In theory, the method of cutting down makes sense. “I will work myself off cigarettes gradually by having less and less each day, until I stop completely”.

Looks great on paper, doesn’t it?

The fact is, cutting down has to be one of the worst methods of quitting smoking.

As humans, we generally don’t like being told what to do. As teenagers we are told “clean up your room, don’t hang out with those idiots, don’t drink or smoke.” So what do we invariably do? We go out drinking and smoking, hanging out with idiots. It is part of human nature, a part we sometimes find hard to control.

When we are told we can’t have something, boy do we want it and unfortunately, age does not rid us of this invariably human trait.

When you cut down, you basically tell yourself, “I can’t have a cigarette now. You would normally have one at this time, but because you are cutting down, you will wait another hour.”

What will you be thinking about for that next hour?

“I WANT A CIGARETTE! GIMME GIMME GIMME!”

As time goes by it plays on your mind so much that you can’t focus on anything else. Whatever you may be doing at the time suffers, whether it be work or recreation. Physically and emotionally you become more tense and stressed out. Those around you may feel the brunt of these emotions.

An hour has painfully ticked by, and now you can finally light up. The cigarette you are now smoking is no normal cigarette, oh no. This is one of the best cigarettes you have ever had. The stress and tension of desperately wanting nicotine for an hour, has been flushed away in one beautiful elongated drag. Your mind clears and you have been satisfied. That feeling of ‘wanting it because you can’t have it’ has gone.

Now it is time to start the whole process again. You tell yourself, “Only two more hours until I can have another precious, wonderful cigarette.”

The very last thing you want to do is think of cigarettes as a positive. In fact you want to be thinking the exact opposite. Cigarettes are your enemy, not your friend. In order to quit successfully you need to think of smoking as an absolute negative.

All cutting down succeeds in doing is heighten the supposed positives effects of smoking.

If you truly want to quit smoking for good you need relearn everything you have ever thought about smoking. Smoking has no positives, only negatives. The nicotine addiction can blind you of this fact. When you think of smoking as a negative and quitting as a positive the quit smoking process becomes a whole lot easier.

Don’t give yourself the opportunity to want what you can’t have. If you change the way you think about smoking, then this situation will never arise. Change your thoughts, and you can change your life.

Our Comments: We feel this method of quitting has to be one of the worst, thought up by some crazy sadist and unleashed on poor unsuspecting smokers just for kicks. All cutting down does is give nicotine the power, and not the other way around. The last thing you want to do when quitting is make cigarettes into any sort of reward.

We recommend you check out our reviews of the Successfully Stop Smoking System, Quit Smoking Right Now and The Easy Quit System for complete systems that deal with both the psychological and physical symptoms of quitting smoking.

Our Rating: Not Recommended
