image of acupuncture of the wristAs anyone who has ever tried to quit smoking can relate to, trying to stop smoking with no help or support can be a daunting task. More and more, people are turning to alternative methods to quit smoking, due to the reported side effects of prescription medications, and conventional methods being completely ineffective for them.

Acupuncture is no magic cure, but using acupuncture to stop smoking is becoming more and more popular in mainstream society. Acupuncture is designed to relieve stress and cleanse the body of toxins.

When acupuncture treatment is coupled with preparation, commitment and a strong desire to quit smoking for good, a growing number of acupuncture converts are being transformed into permanent non-smokers. Acupuncture will not take cravings away, but it can lessen the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

An acupuncturist will examine you, then create a treatment plan that is specifically designed for you. They will look at your tongue, take your blood pressure and pulse, and ask you a series of questions. The acupuncturist will concentrate on the areas of withdrawal that you find most problematic, then design the treatment to deal with those symptoms.

The acupuncturist will then use a set of needles of various shapes and sizes. These tiny needles are inserted along the Meridian Pathways, which in ancient Chinese acupuncture theory, are said to carry vital energy which flows around the body. There are 12 main Meridians, all of which correspond to the systems of function in our body, including the lung, heart and liver amongst others.

Parts of the body that the acupuncturist may concentrate on are the ears and wrist. The points in this area are commonly used to reduce tension, enhance willpower, take the edge off withdrawal symptoms, control appetite, manage cravings and calm the nervous system.

Like anything humans have no proven or definitive answers to, there is some controversy surrounding the effectiveness of acupuncture to quit smoking. There is a growing number of people reporting great results however, and together with a strategic quit smoking plan, have become long term non-smokers.

In some countries, anyone can legally practice acupuncture, but it certainly pays to work with a registered acupuncturist. They will be able to explain to you how exactly they can use acupuncture to help you quit smoking, and create treatment plan that could work for you. The treatment schedules will vary, typically lasting from ten to 30 minutes, with treatment once or twice a week for 4-6 weeks. There then may be monthly follow-ups.

Our Comments: We’re not entirely convinced, but if nothing else has worked for you and you wish to give acupuncture a try, it is a natural method so it certainly can’t hurt.

We do feel quitting smoking is far more of a psychological issue than a physical one, so requiring a shift in thinking, rather than simply dealing with physical cravings alone.
